►  "Nisim” (Miracles) – that is the name of Shloime Gertner’s new album. Gertner, 27, a Viznitzer chosid, didn’t call his debut album “Miracles” for nothing. Seven years ago, he decided to leave his country, England, to take upon himself the position as cantor in a thriving congregation in the United States. A few days before leaving, when the family was already all packed up, his wife received news for the doctors that the baby girl which she was about to give birth to would not live r”l. Gertner consulted his rabbis who instructed him to stay in England, and accompany difficult birth procedure. The child Malkale, was born indeed with a medical problem, but with G-d’s help she lived and reacted well to her surroundings. Since she was born, he sang to her every night, “Malkaleh”, a lullaby which is the only thing that communicates with her. The composer Yossi Green wrote for him a new song, “Kodesh Hi Lachem Shabbat HaMalka”, which combines a Shabbos song and his daughter’s name Malka. The producer Yossi Tyberg, directed all the work on the album, which was recorded in different studios on three continents. The compositions belong to Yossi Green, Pinky Weber. Yossi Gurvitz and Menachem Kraus. To the familiar arrangers such as Moshe Laufer, Eli Laufer, Leib Yakov Rigler and Hershy Ginsberg, joins the Israeli guitar artist, Avi Singolda who arranged the song “Mehera”. The musical arrangement wanders between electronic music and authentic Jewish music. Lipa Shmeltzer wrote “Shmeichel”, a song in Yiddish which talks about a smile and recommends smiling always. Distribution: Greentec. Click to listen to a mix from the album

►  Miami 30 – the Album and the Event. Under this title, the Miami Boys Choir headed by the legendary conductor, Yerachmiel Begun, set out celebrating their 30th anniversary. As part of the celebrations the untiring choir have released a new album – “Miami Mashiach”, an album which includes new songs beside old songs which were performed at five different performances. The album was recorded at five different studios and was arranged partly by Begun himself. In addition to the Miami Boys, also Ohad, David Gabay and Michoel Shintzeler perform in the album. To the disc is attached a fancy album which includes pictures of the choir from the various performances. During Chol Hamoed Pesach, a great performance will take place at the Brooklyn College in New York, where, besides the choir, will perform also a Miami Boys alumni – Yisrael Williger and the “Acheinu”, too. There are expected to be surprises such as more alumni whose names have not yet been uncovered and also a video presentation of all the choir’s years of activity. During the performance, one of the precipitants will win a ticket to Israel. As part of the advertising campaign for the performance and for the album, a number of boys from the choir have visited at Nachum Segal’s popular radio program in the US, and exclusive Chasidinews sources inform that soon we are expected to hear part of the choir boys on one of the Jewish music programs in Israel, too, as part of the expected preparations towards a round of Miami Boys performances in Israel in the coming summer. Distribution: Greentec.

►  “Sim Shalom” Chamisha Kolot Orchestra’s new album with Adi Ran and Srulik Hershtik has finally arrived at the stores. “Sim Shalom” is actually the Chasidic orchestra “Chamisha Kolot” ‘s debut album, whose members musically accompanied the two singers. The album includes almost a whole hour of music, and features five songs from the scriptures in new compositions, and two Chasidic medleys. As opposed to Ran’s Rock-‘n’-Roll style, the current album bears a totally Chasidic style. Three of the songs in the album were composed by Adi Ran, another song was composed by Hershtik and another was composed by the album’s producer, Shachar Blumenthal. For Hershtik these are his first recordings since his albums as wonder-boy of the worldwide cantillation. In addition, the movie “Chamisha Kolot” is attached to the album which is actually a ‘behind-the-scenes’ of the album in which we will watch Adi Ran’s clip, get to know the Chamisha Kolot Orchestra, watch pieces from the recordings in the studios and listen to Adi and Srulik  talking about the idea behind the album. Another of the album’s novelties is that all the songs are attached to the album also as MP3s. Distribution: Hindik Productions. Hindik Productions present to you as a gift the song ‘Od Yishama’. The impressive performance amazed those present and especially Neshama Carlebach who asked him to take on the post of cantor and Ba’al Koreh in the central Carlebach shul in New York. The work on the album took over two years, while Avi Singolda, for the first time, participated in all the stages of the production and arrangements. Most of the lyrics and compositions are Yehuda’s and some of them are by R’ Moshe Shur, “Nigun Moshe” which was released as a single and a renewed version of ‘Shirat HaAsavim’ by Naomi Shemer, while in the second part of the album he sings some of the best of R’ Shlomo’s hits in exciting and touching performances and special arrangements. The album features 30 songs which have become a regular possession of the whole community and in it participates as guest soloist the boy Nadav Loverboim. “We didn’t want to renew, we wanted to excite. "A Groyse Metzia" – A new band made up of Frum from Birth, Baalei Teshuva and those that are not yet frum. Their music is influenced by all types of music, some of the band members have played in rock, jazz and even African music bands – but this album is the less known side of Carlebach, Chabad and "Baal Hasulam" (Rabbi Yehuda Leib Halevi Ashlag) and his son Harav Boruch Sholom Ashlag.

Yossi Asheri

A groyse Metzia – why did you choose this name?

We were looking for a name that would reflect on our Jewish roots and at the same time express the sense of humor that exists in our music and band, "A groyse Metzia" is an expression that one usually uses in a sarcastic manner in Yiddish, which means – A Big Catch.

The members of the Band

The members of the band are: Oren Tzur –Violin and singer, Nadav Bachar – Electric guitar and singer, Shai Perlman – Electric guitar and singer, David Ada – Keyboard, Yarom Ita – Percussions and singer, Ofer Eshed – Bass and Eyal Nissenboim – Drums.

How was your band founded?

Oren, Ofer, Eyal and Nadav had played together in the past in a band called "Or Yarok" (Green light). Last winter, Eyal, Ofer and Nadav got together for two sessions of music playing in a Music recording studio in Kibbutz Maanit, where Ofer was working at the time. Following them Oren and Shai joined them during the next playing sessions, we started to improvise and flow with the ideas for tunes, the results - we recorded. During the album recordings David Ada and Yarom Ita joined us – that’s how it all started.

How does it all blend in having Frum from birth Jews, Baalei Teshuva and those that are not yet frum?

We all agree that a Jew is a Jew no matter what, even if his Yarmulke may be see-through, we have abolished all barriers between the different sects, therefore, our music playing all together is natural to us, we learn and produce our music together.

How did you choose what to play?

The idea was to find tunes that had not yet been covered in different versions, including tunes of Baal Hasulam and his son the Rabash Tz"l, less known Chabad and Carlebach tunes.

Even the popular songs were arranged in an original and more modern sounding style that has not existed until now in the Jewish music scene. In addition there is also original material that has been brought from our Jewish sources that is expressed both musically and vocally.

What new ideas does the band have to offer?

"A Groyse Metzia" is a band formed of Baalei Teshuva, Frum from birth and Jews that do not cover their head, the binding thread between the band members and the music is the love of a fellow Jew and the Love of Hashem. Our purpose is to publicize the holy tunes of Am Yisroel, to make the young generation that otherwise wouldn't be attracted to this type of music, aware of it.

Our band does not operate according to the standard Jewish musical scene, our music is spontaneous and is not bound by a certain popular musical style of the time, but receives musical influence by the different types of music that the members of the band bring with them; Rock, Jazz, African music and more.

A little about the album

The album was recorded last winter in the "Tzlilim Amitiyim" (real cords ) Studio in Kibbutz Maanit. Most of the recordings were played spontaneously by all the band members together. Included are many improvisations that were influenced by both Jazz and Progressive Rock, these were later arranged for the album. We also added more musical instruments; Keyboards and Trumpets .The mix was also arranged in the Tzlilim Amitiyim studio by Ofer, Shai and Oren. The album can be purchased online – CD or Digital, for details please visit our website at www.groyse.com.

A special story about one of the songs

The song called "Hey", there is a special guest performer – a nice young man who gave Nadav a ride to the recordings. We needed the sound of a breaking plate during this particular piece and he had the honor of making the sound. We gave him a plate and hammer, placed him in the middle of the studio and the result can be heard on the album.

By the way, this same song "Hey" was publicized on Rooftop Roots Volume ll that was produced by JDUB records – the same record company that publicized the collection of Matisyahu's first albums and was wildly popular worldwide. In addition, another special musical instrument in this song is a tea tray that Shai kicked during the recording of the song "Ki Chilatzta Nafshi".

Do you describe yourselves as "Reliving the tunes", how is this expressed in your music?

We believe that the current musical approach is made up of many varying styles. This will enable us to reach a wider range of listeners, who will enjoy the old and wonderful tunes that otherwise wouldn't have reached them.

A Groyse Metzia – indeed – Thank you and Good Luck!
